LIFTING OF TRADE BANS WITH FIJI WELCOMED

The Australia Fiji Business Council (AFBC) today welcomed the decision by the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) and its affiliate unions to lift the bans on the movement of goods and mail between Australia and Fiji.

The AFBC also acknowledged the role of the Fiji Trade Union Council (FTUC) in recognising the damage the bans were causing to the Fiji economy and the hardship being caused to workers including union members in Fiji.

The AFBC said it would work actively in coming months with all relevant parties in Fiji to help the recovery of the Fiji economy from the devastating effects of events since 19 May.

The AFBC commended the Interim Military Government of Fiji for its efforts to resolve the crisis and place Fiji on a path to return to normalcy, and again called on the hostage takers to release the hostages without further delay.
