AUSTRALIA FIJI BUSINESS COUNCIL
WECOMES HOSTAGES’ RELEASE

The President of the Australia Fiji Business Council, Mr Ross Porter, today welcomed the release of the political hostages who had been held captive in Fiji since 19 May.

Mr Porter said the release of the hostages removed a major impediment to Fiji moving back down the path towards normalcy.

He noted that the Fiji economy had been seriously damaged by the taking hostage of the elected government of Fiji, and more recently by various acts of occupation of government installations and tourist resorts.

Mr Porter said that notwithstanding these setbacks, the Council remained confident that with proper management of economic, social and political issues in Fiji the economy could recover and Fiji and Australia would remain valuable and mutually respected business partners.

Mr Porter said bilateral trade in goods and services between Australia and Fiji exceeded one billion dollars per annum.

Mr Porter said the Council stood ready to work closely with Fiji businesses in rebuilding the economy.
