AUSTRALIA FIJI BUSINESS COUNCIL WELCOMES DOWNGRADING OF TRAVEL WARNING

The President of the Australia Fiji Business Council, Mr Ross Porter, today welcomed the decision by the Australian Government to downgrade its consular travel advice in respect of travel to Fiji.

"The Council shares the Government’s assessment that the situation in Fiji has stabilized to the point where Australians can once again be confident they can travel there for holidays and business", Mr Porter said.

Mr Porter noted that 80 000 Australians visit Fiji annually, and provide the underpinning for the tourist industry. In addition, there is a substantial Australian investment in Fiji’s tourist industry.

"Many thousands of jobs in Fiji have been lost since the 19 May coup, and ordinary Fijians of all races are hurting badly through no fault of their own.

"Australians can now play an important part in restoring the jobs of these people by now visiting Fiji for holidays or to do business."

Mr Porter said he would be leading a business mission to Fiji later this month, and would be meeting with the Fiji government and business in Fiji to establish how Australian business can help the rebuilding process in Fiji.
