WHO ARE WE?
The AFBC was established in 1986 with the aim of providing a framework within which the private sector can communicate with the Australian and Fiji Islands governments at the highest political and policy advising levels with a view to finding solutions to trade and investment issues involving the two countries. It also provides members with an all important network to help further their business goals in Fiji.

WHO ARE THE MEMBERS?
Membership of the Council includes a wide range of industry groups, from large corporations to small family companies.  Some of the industries represented are:

accountancy/audit

food/confectionery

management and business consultancy
building & construction
banking
tobacco/food/confectionery
legal services

WHAT ACTIVITIES DOES THE COUNCIL OFFER ITS MEMBERS?

  • participation in regular bilateral Ministerial talks to discuss major policy issues of concern to Australian business
  • receiving and sending of trade and investment delegations between Australia and Fiji
  • periodic trade, investment and information seminars on Fiji
  • an annual conference co-hosted jointly with our Fiji-based counterpart, the Fiji Australia Business Council, held alternately in Australia and in Fiji
  • providing regular information to members on political and economic issues in Fiji
  • networking opportunities with Australian businesses with long experience in Fiji, and with Fiji based businesses.
  • links with policy and decision makers in government in Fiji.

WHAT ARE THE COUNCIL'S GOALS AND OBJECTIVES?
The Council’s objectives, set out in its constitution, are as follows:

(a) To promote friendship, goodwill and understanding between the business communities of Australia and Fiji.
(b) To maintain, support, promote and encourage trade, investment, technical and economic co-operation and tourism between Australia and Fiji.
(c) To maintain, promote and extend industrial and commercial relations between individuals, firms, companies, corporations, institutions and associations of Australia and Fiji.
(d) To carry out objective research studies on any matters affecting or concerning any of the above objectives.
(e) To arrange for regular and effective consultation between business enterprises in Australia and Fiji.
(f) To encourage and sponsor education, personnel exchange and training schemes at the private sector level between Australia and Fiji, with the aim of mutually enhancing experience, education and capabilities.
(g) To maintain liaison with the Governments of both Australia and Fiji in order to promote any of the above objectives and to ensure that the concerns, views and plans of the Australian and Fiji commercial sectors are clearly conveyed to the governments of both countries.
(h) To co-operate with an appropriate body established in Fiji and to arrange for regular and effective consultation, communication and meetings with it.
(i) To provide a forum for contacts and discussions of questions of common interest and information, advice and services.
(j) To seek to ensure the continuation of a stable relationship between the two countries.

HOW MUCH DOES MEMBERSHIP COST?
There are three classes of membership available for businesses or individuals to join the Council. These are:

Sponsor Member – ($1530 per annum)
A business or person engaged in trade and commerce between Australia and Fiji or in Fiji whose name shall be listed on appropriate Council printed and electronic material as a Sponsor Member.

Corporate Member – ($765 per annum)
A business or person engaged in trade and commerce between Australia and Fiji or in Fiji.

Associate Member – ($360 per annum)
Only companies with less than four employees are eligible for this class of membership. An Associate Member may only receive limited services from the Council, and has no rights to participate in the management of the Council as an Executive Committee member or to vote at general meetings of the Council.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES
In addition to the basic services provided to members by the Council, its resources are also available to perform additional services for members and non-members.

These additional services include:

  • monitoring of Australian and Fiji print media beyond that already provided to members;
  • provision of general background briefing on events in Fiji;
  • research on trade and economic data;
  • writing of speeches, media releases etc.,
  • arranging meetings, functions and events in Australia or in Fiji including provision of suggested guest lists, venues etc.;
  • advice on market access;
  • and other services by agreement.
